BUILDS · 0.5 RUNES OF ALDUR

Best 0.5 league-starter builds

0.5 reshuffled the meta: leech and energy-shield builds got hit, minions and a few skills got buffed. For a 2-hours-a-night player, the best league starter isn't the highest-ceiling build, it's the one that maps safely, needs no chase uniques, and sidesteps the nerfs. Here are the picks that fit, by role. Then let the build finder rank them for how you actually play.

01 What makes a good 0.5 starter

Four filters. The more a build ticks, the safer your league start.

  • Doesn't lean on leech or energy shield: those are exactly what 0.5 nerfed. Builds that recovered through them feel worse now.
  • Cheap or no chase uniques: you want to be functional from your own drops, not gated behind a 50-Divine item.
  • Safe, repeatable mapping > flashy ceiling: dying resets your momentum, and momentum is all a limited-time player has.
  • Scales into endgame: it should still be doing work when you hit the Atlas, not just clearing the campaign.

02 Safest self-found mappers

Start here if you want a smooth, forgiving league that doesn't depend on the trade market.

ED / Contagion Lich
Lich · Witch. The SSF king: best self-found build two leagues running. Chaos DoT spreads across packs; no leech, no ES, no uniques. Sidesteps every 0.5 nerf.
Ice-Tipped Twisters
Spirit Walker · Huntress. Twister escaped 0.5 untouched. Still king of mapping. No leech, no ES, so none of the nerfs apply. Companions tank for you.
Grenadier
Witchhunter · Mercenary. Fastest campaign in the game, zero uniques required. Explosive + gas + oil grenades chain for huge AoE. Day-1 clean-start pick.

03 Buffed, bossing & party picks

Higher ceiling or a specific job: pick these if you know what you want from the league.

Tempest Bell Martial Artist · biggest buff
Martial Artist · Monk. The biggest buff of the patch. New ascendancy summons mirages that execute your bell strikes. Hands-on melee with rhythm; endgame gloves a hard requirement.
Mirage Snipe Deadeye
Deadeye · Ranger. Strongest single-target in the game with zero personal risk: Mirage channels Snipe while you move freely. The boss-carrier's pick. Snipe base damage was buffed.
Cast-on-Crit Comet
Sorceress. Boss-deleting burst with near-invulnerable defenses. Heavier setup, but god-tier endgame once the system is synced.
Infernal Army
Infernalist · Witch. Zero-risk duo carry: the skeleton army does the work while you buff. 0.5 buffed skeleton damage nodes. Works SSF from Act 1.
Archmage Spark Stormweaver
Stormweaver · Sorceress. The S-tier caster of 0.4, still strong if you can afford the mana ramp. Best raw clear speed in the game when geared, but a glass cannon.
Whirling Assault Titan
Titan · Warrior. Survived with buffs. Ignite Atlas nodes feed Hammer of the Gods for the biggest single hits in the game. Tanky melee for group play.

04 Pick with eyes open

Poisonburst Pathfinder was nerfed in 0.5. Poison Burst duration was cut ~40% (4.9s → 3s) and Overwhelming Toxicity stings harder, so single-target and bossing feel weak now. It's still cheap and SSF-playable as a pure DoT mapper, but it's no longer a top starter. If you want a self-found DoT build, ED/Contagion Lich is the stronger pick this patch.

05 Don't just copy a tier list

The "best" build is the one that matches your time, playstyle and party: a boss-carrier for a duo is a different answer than a solo dad-mode mapper. Our build finder asks six quick questions and ranks all eleven builds for your actual reality, with honest notes on each.

06 Quick FAQ

Is leech dead in 0.5?

Not dead, but weaker: leech and energy-shield sustain were nerfed, so builds that recovered through them feel rougher. Builds that never relied on them (Twisters, Lich, Grenadier) are unaffected and rose up the rankings as a result.

What's the best build for a duo?

A carry pair: a boss-deleter like Mirage Snipe Deadeye or Cast-on-Crit Comet alongside a safe mapper or an Infernal Army minion build that buffs the whole party. The build finder has a duo-aware mode.

Do I need to play the meta to have fun?

No. Off-meta picks like Acolyte of Chayula are cheaper to gear because nobody's competing for the items. The meta matters most if you're racing or trading hard. For a casual league, "safe and fun" beats "top tier."
