Leveling gear

The best cheap leveling uniques in 0.5, by slot

Two dads, two characters, one campaign to grind through before the real game starts. The fastest way through the acts is not a perfect rare. It is a handful of cheap uniques that punch way above their level requirement. Here are the ones we actually slot, sorted by gear slot so you can fill out a character fast.

All of these are low-level, low-cost, and most are class-agnostic. Price-check before you buy on /market and value your own drops on /stash.

01 The short answer

If you want a default leveling kit that works for almost any build, grab these and move on:

  • Boots: Wanderlust at level 11. 20% movement speed and immunity to Slows, a 20% movement-speed roll you normally can't get on a rare boot until much higher item levels.
  • Helmet: Goldrim at level 10. All-res plus some evasion and item rarity. The staple cheap leveling helm through the acts.
  • Weapon: pick by class. Lifesprig for casters, Pillar of the Caged God for attribute stackers, Widowhail for bows.
  • Belt: Midnight Braid from level 1 for mana sustain and resists.

Everything below is the slot-by-slot breakdown, including the spicier picks for specific build types.

02 Boots and the early movement-speed fix

Wanderlust (Wrapped Sandals, level 11) is the leveling boot. It gives 20% increased Movement Speed and immunity to Slows, plus a little Energy Shield and Dexterity. That 20% movement-speed roll is normally out of reach on a rare boot until much higher item levels, so an 11-requirement boot that hands it to you is a huge early tempo gain. The Slow immunity also keeps you from getting bogged down in chilled or tar ground while you are running the acts.

03 Helmets

Goldrim (Felt Cap, level 10) is the all-rounder. It grants +(25-35)% to all Elemental Resistances along with evasion and 10% increased item rarity. That resistance block alone solves most of your early defensive gaps, which is why it is the staple cheap all-res leveling helm through the acts.

Crown of the Victor (Iron Crown, level 5) trades the resists for offense and sustain: +1 to Level of all Skills, 10 Life and 10 Mana per enemy killed, and (10-15)% increased item rarity. The skill level and per-kill recovery make it strong on fast-clearing characters that already have resists covered elsewhere.

Ezomyte Peak (Soldier Greathelm, level 12, 19 Str) is the melee and strength pick. It stacks increased Armour, flat maximum Life, Life Regeneration, increased Area of Effect, and the Unwavering Stance keystone, making it a cheap early survivability helmet for builds that can wear the strength requirement.

04 Weapons, pick by build

Your leveling weapon depends on what you are scaling. All three of these are cheap and usable very early.

  • Lifesprig (Attuned Wand, level 2) for casters. It grants +(1-3) to Level of all Spell Skill Gems, +(10-20) maximum Mana, (5-10)% increased Cast Speed, and 1% life leech on cast. Cheap and class-agnostic for any Act 1 spellcaster.
  • Pillar of the Caged God (Long Quarterstaff, level 4, 9 Dex) for attribute stackers. Weapon damage scales with Strength, attack speed with Dexterity, and area of effect with Intelligence, plus 16% increased Melee Strike Range. Usable from level 4 by any class.
  • Widowhail (Crude Bow, level 1) for bows. Its only mod grants (150-250)% increased bonuses from your Equipped Quiver, turning quiver mods into the bow's main source of power for any early bow build.

05 Body armour

Ghostwrithe (Tattered Robe, level 1) is for energy-shield and Chaos Inoculation leaning characters. It converts 35% of Maximum Life to Energy Shield while granting +100 maximum Energy Shield and +(29-37)% Chaos Resistance, giving you a large defensive pool from the very first act. If your build does not lean on Energy Shield, skip it. If it does, this is a level-1 wall.

06 Quiver, rings, and belts

Asphyxia's Wrath (Broadhead Quiver, level 1) pairs naturally with Widowhail for bow users. It adds flat cold and physical damage to attacks, grants extra cold damage, attack speed and cold resistance, and makes chilled enemies take increased damage by their Chill Magnitude. Bow only.

Blackheart (Iron Ring, no level requirement) is a fit-anywhere damage ring. It adds flat physical and chaos damage to attacks, regenerates 3-6 life per second, and has a 25% chance to Intimidate enemies for 4 seconds on hit. With no requirement at all, you can wear it from the first ring slot you get.

For belts, Midnight Braid (Rawhide Belt, level 1) recoups 50% of damage taken as mana while granting maximum mana, all-res, increased flask life recovery, and 1-3 charm slots. Birthright Buckle (Wide Belt, level 14) is the flask-economy pick: it increases and reduces flask charges used, makes Life and Mana Flasks used while on Low Life or Low Mana apply their Recovery instantly, and adds armour.

07 Quick FAQ

What is the single best leveling unique to grab first?

Goldrim and Wanderlust are the two we reach for first on almost every character. Goldrim (level 10) covers your elemental resistances cheaply, and Wanderlust (level 11) gives you 20% movement speed and Slow immunity, a 20% movement-speed roll you normally can't get on a rare boot until much higher item levels. Together they fix tempo and survivability for a handful of currency.

Which leveling weapon should I use?

Pick by what you scale. Casters want Lifesprig (level 2) for +(1-3) to all Spell Skill Gems, cast speed, and life leech on cast. Attribute stackers want Pillar of the Caged God (level 4), which scales damage with Strength, attack speed with Dexterity, and area with Intelligence. Bow builds want Widowhail (level 1), which turns your quiver into the bow's main power source.

Is Ghostwrithe worth it for every character?

No. Ghostwrithe converts 35% of your Maximum Life to Energy Shield, so it only makes sense for energy-shield or Chaos Inoculation builds. For those it is a level-1 wall with +100 ES and big Chaos Resistance. If your build runs on Life, skip it.

Where do I check prices on these uniques?

Use /market to price-check before you buy, and /stash to value your own drops. Most of these are cheap by design, but supply swings early in a league, so a quick check saves you from overpaying in the first week.
